This was one of the most brutal scenes for me. I think it’s because I had never really seen Xena truly helpless before, and knowing that for all of Gabrielle’s faith and love in her they were unable to avoid the destiny that Alti had foreseen. Also, Gabrielle’s head toss away as the nails are driven in just kills me.
13 years later and I still cry with the same scenes, just like I did the very first day. Ides of March is one of those episodes that both thrill me and break my heart. From the moment when Gabrielle picks up that sword and disregards “the way of love” to save a paralyzed Xena, to them dying together at the cross. It’s 42 minutes of selfless love and sacrifice.
This scene was one of the worst to watch. I can’t watch it without crying. It’s amazing how after so many years, and no matter how many times you watch it, it still effects you so deeply.
